Deep within the captivating rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His life was untarnished, simple, and honest. His primary duty was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.

Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his wards instilled in him a here feeling of quiet fulfillment.

But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.

Narratives of predators preying on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered no wolf.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. However, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
